THERE was a familiar if unexpected face among the cast and crew filming a new Doctor Who episode in Cardiff yesterday.
Catherine Tate – whose character Donna Noble was written out of the last series – was with David Tennant and Bernard Cribbins in a quiet cul-de-sac in Cyncoed filming what is believed to be the Christmas special.
Tennant, 37, will face a do-or-die drama during the seasonal special and go through the process of regeneration – a change in physical form that sees the Doctor transform into his next incarnation, who will be played by 11th Doctor Matt Smith.
Yesterday’s drizzle failed to dampen the stars’ spirits, with 80-year-old Cribbins, who plays Donna’s grandad, seen sporting a pair of festive antlers after cameras started to roll.
An onlooker told the Echo: “I saw them filming inside a house when it was raining then outside again when it wasn’t. David, Bernard and Catherine were all there and seemed to be in good spirits.
“I caught a glimpse of David and Bernard having a cup of tea and a laugh together as they filmed what looked like the Christmas special. The other day, David went out during the rain to sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans.”
Around a dozen fans gathered in Cyncoed to catch a glimpse of Tennant acting out his final scenes in the show. Half a dozen on-set security guards and police officers lined the road, and series fanatics said they could see the Tardis – the Time Lord’s famous time-travel machine – on standby at the set.
The Christmas episode is the one that fans have been anticipating most as the culmination of a series of four seasonal specials, the first of which will be screened on Saturday.
The Easter Special, Planet of the Dead, was filmed deep in a Dubai desert and fans will be able to see the episode on BBC One at 6.45pm.
Caleb Woodbridge, long-standing Doctor Who fan and author of series blog, A Journal of Impossible Things, said that even though the Christmas episode is more than eight months away, fans are already speculating about its plot.
“It’s a matter of great speculation and excitement. We know that David will be regenerated, but also that the show’s writer, Russell T Davies, likes his grand finales, so we expect it to be a very special episode,” the 23-year-old, of Roath, Cardiff, said.
“There are a lot of rumours floating around and fans think renegade Time Lord the Master could come back.”
It is still unclear how Davies will bid farewell to such a popular member of his cast, though he has promised the specials will involve CGI monsters, prosthetic monsters, army, police and an alien planet.
“It’s our last chance to have a bit of a laugh. Now the Doctor’s facing the end of his life, it’s going to get dark,” he said this week.
An estimated nine million viewers tuned in to watch the 2008 Easter instalment of the series.

Tennant 'never wavered from Who path'
David Tennant has said that he "never once wavered" from the path to playing a Time Lord in Doctor Who.
The actor also told The Times that he understood the distinction between fiction and reality when he first watched the programme.
Tennant said: "I remember, after seeing Jon Pertwee turn into Tom Baker in Doctor Who, having a conversation with my parents at a very young age about actors and what they did.
"I remember getting the distinction between a character and an actor, as they explained it. I understood what fiction was very clearly."
He added: "I always feel uneasy when people talk about children not understanding the difference between fantasy and reality.
"I can only have been three, and was just enthralled. But I was quite clear that I didn't want to be a Time Lord - I wanted to be the person who played a Time Lord."
David Tennant will leave Doctor Who after this year's specials and be replaced by Matt Smith for the fifth series of the show.

Grandad will be a companion
David Tennant's final Doctor Who companion has been revealed, and it's a familiar face to fans of the Time Lord.
Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies has said that Bernard Cribbins - who played Donna Noble's grandad - will be back at Christmas as a companion.
Davies added that it will be a packed end to the year, with a special in November and a two-parter at Christmas.
So does that mean Donna will be back too? And if so will she still be unable to remember her adventures?
See pics of the Doctor Who Easter Special
And internet rumours suggest other characters could be back too for Christmas, as the actors who play them have been spotted on the film set.
We don't want to give anything away, but it seems like the Tardis could be packed tightly before Tennant hands over the keys to a new actor.
But while those episodes are a long way off yet, there is a brand new one being shown on Saturday.
It's called Planet of the Dead, and stars former EastEnder Michelle Ryan as a jewel thief who bumps into the Doctor and ends up travelling with him.
The Christmas specials are the last of four special episodes that will see Tennant give up the role as the Doctor.
Taking his place in the Tardis will be Matt Smith, who will become the 11th Doctor and star in his own series in 2010.

Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies reveals talk of Star Trek crossover
RUSSELL T DAVIES has revealed that he had planned a crossover between the Doctor Who and Star Trek TV series.
Speaking to the Sunday Times, the Doctor Who showrunner said: "I would have loved to have done a Star Trek crossover. The very first year, we talked about it. Then Star Trek finally went off air.
"Landing the Tardis on board the Enterprise would have been magnificent. Can you imagine what their script department would have wanted, and what I would have wanted? It would have been the biggest battle."
Davies quits the hit show after this year's four specials, the first of which airs at Easter, and will be replaced by Steven Moffat. Star Trek makes a return to the big screen in May.

Will "Planet of the Dead" Be Finished In Time?
The first of this year's Doctor Who specials faces an adventure worthy of the Time Lord himself...
Ex-BBC Newsround presenter and uber fan Lizo Mzimba has reported, via Twitter, that the first of this year's Doctor Who specials is still not finished.
Tweeting on the social networking site the BBC presenter said: "No press launch. It won't be finished in time." The press launch for Planet of the Dead was due to take place this week but this is not the first time that a Doctor Who episode has gone straight from the editing room to the screen. Even last year's series finale was not shown to any press before its broadcast on BBC One.
Showrunner Russell T Davies has assured the fans that the episode will be finished in time whilst also adding that the title and a preview of the next special will be shown at the end of Planet of the Dead, airing Saturday 11th April, 6.45pm. It will be repeated the next day on BBC Three and then on Easter Monday on BBC One at 5pm.
As the first special approaches the promotion for Doctor Who hots up with David Tennant and Catherine Tate sitting in for Jonathan Ross on his Radio 2 show on April 11th. John Barrowman is their guest along with The Proclaimers. One-off companion Michelle Ryan can also be seen on Wednesday's edition of the BBC children's programme, Blue Peter.

Bernard Cribbins Returns? Is Catherine Tate far behind?
After a short break, a very familiar face is spotted on set - but does this mean someone else is coming back too? There's also some news of a trailer...
Filming on David Tennant's final Doctor Who story has begun today with the return of the actor Bernard Cribbins.
Cribbins, who plays Donna Noble's grandfather Wilf, was last seen in the Series 4 finale, Journey's End and first appeared in Doctor Who in the 1966 film, Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150AD.
The legendary actor was spotted on set in Tredegar House where Who has filmed a number of times, including most recently in The Next Doctor. Next week, the production team are heading to another familiar location - the house used for Donna Noble's home.
David Harewood, currently starring as Friar Tuck in BBC1's Robin Hood, confirmed on Jonathan Ross's radio show that he will also be starring in the two part finale, due to air over the Christmas period.
The first special, Planet of the Dead, is due to air April 12, with the first trailer being broadcast this Wednesday on BBC1.

Will Tom Baker make a return to Who???
IT MAY be 28 years since he quit as Doctor Who but Tom Baker could finally be making a late return to the show.
Programme insiders say discussions have taken place about bringing back the flamboyant Baker, 75, for a cameo appearance next year with new Time Lord Matt Smith.Baker’s return could see him re-united with Elisabeth Sladen who played his sidekick Sarah Jane Smith in the Seventies
A BBC mole said: “As it’s Doctor Who, his return all these years on could be explained in all manner of ways.”Baker, most recently the narrator of Little Britain, has previously said that he would be open to the idea of returning, suggesting he could even portray the Doctor’s arch-foe The Master.

Catherine Tate: I thought I was the new Doctor Who
ACTRESS Catherine Tate, who played Doctor Who's companion Donna Noble, said that she had been convinced that she would be the next Time Lord.
Speaking on The Justin Lee Collins Show, which was repeated on ITV tonight, she said that she became suspicious because of persistent attention from the press in the days before Matt Smith was announced as the 11th Doctor on January 3.
She said: "For about four days leading up to [the announcement] there was one particular paper that was so adamant that it was me that they kept ringing up and asking for quotes, confirmation, and saying 'Can we just get a statement?'
"I actually thought 'Maybe it is me, maybe the BBC are so stringent that they haven't told me yet'. For a minute I thought it must be me and that they had told all the papers before telling me!"
Tate, who is to star in a big-screen remake of Gulliver's Travels, as I reported earlier, added that her appearance in Doctor Who had put her five-year-old daughter Erin off the programme.
She said: "She was a fan of Doctor Who until I went on it. She really liked it and then I went on it and it was a bit scary for her and she thought her mummy was in danger. She doesn't watch Doctor Who any more, I ruined it for her."
Tate added: "I loved being in the show, I loved it so much. I even have an action figure - that's exciting to get a little plastic doll made of you. But if you look closely, it does look quite like Cher!
"With my own show [The Catherine Tate Show] I said I didn't really want dolls but on Doctor Who, you don't get a choice. They say 'We are going to merchandise you and that's that.' But I'm delighted with it."

Easter Sunday For First Special
April 12 will have the biggest Easter Egg of them all - the "200th" Doctor Who story, Planet of the Dead.
The listings magazine for Sky customers, Sky Mag, is reporting that the first of this year's Doctor Who specials will be screened on Easter Sunday - April 12.
No specific time has been detailed but the BBC have scheduled Planet of the Dead for Week 15, which takes in April 11-17. Airing the special on the Sunday will ease the potential headache for schedulers as the Saturday night of April 11 will see BBC1's Robin Hood squaring off against ITV1's Primeval.
A trailer for the special was screened in the Millenium Stadium during the half time of the recent Six Nations Rugby game which would indicate that it will hit our screens this weekend, possibly after (or before) the Robin Hood series opener.
Planet of the Dead will also be screened on BBC HD, a first for Doctor Who, and stars Lee Evans (The Fifth Element) with Michelle Ryan (The Bionic Woman). The DVD already has a release date of May 11.

Jessica Hynes cameo confirmed
Its been rumored that Jessica Hynes would be returning for a cameo but now it's official, thanks to the set pics on planet galifrey, and I09 . But it's the present day, not pre-World War I England. And Hynes appears to be playing someone named Verity Newman (a play on Doctor Who's creators, who included Verity Lambert and Sydney Newman.) She's written a book called A Journal Of Impossible Things, apparently based on the journal the humanized Doctor left behind. And she's doing a book signing, where the Doctor shows up to have words with her. The Doctor is stern but sad, then he turns and walks away.

Piper, Tate, Freema, and Simms to return???
BILLIE Piper will return to Doctor Who with ALL the Time Lord’s former companions as part of David Tennant’s final episode.
Billie, 26, will again play Rose Tyler and teams up with other sidekicks Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman).
The trio will join forces to take on the Doctor’s revived arch-enemy The Master, played again by John Simm.
The episode sees the Timelord regenerate into the new Doctor (Matt Smith).
An insider said: “This will be the most exciting episode Doctor Who have ever done. We really wanted to get all the companions back on board as a fitting send-off to David.
“And of all the enemies for him to face in his final episode it makes sense for The Master to be the main one. Getting Billie to agree is a real coup, but she loved working on the show so much it didn’t take much convincing.”
Rose — who left after series two — formed the strongest bond with the Doctor out of the female companions. She returned for a few episodes in the last series where she was reunited with the Doctor.
Rose then returned to Earth with a separate half-human version of the Time Lord.
Since she left Doctor Who, Billie has gone on to star in the raunchy ITV2 drama Secret Diary of a Call Girl. She plays a high-class hooker in the risque show, which is currently on its third series.
We revealed yesterday how her three brothers and sisters are embarrassed about her success.
David, 37, will quit the show after the last of the four specials.
Meanwhile the red London bus set to feature in the first special has been damaged in Dubai by schoolkids.

Doctor Who's David Tennant will fight his last war against Martians
David Tennant will have to fight creatures from Mars in his last days as Doctor Who.
Among those he takes on will be ex-soap actor Peter O'Brien, who played Shane Ramsay in Neighbours and renegade doctor Stitch in Casualty.
He told reporters in Sydney he will appear as a villain in the story.
Glamorous actress Gemma Chan has also been lined up as a baddie.
A source said: "Peter and Gemma's evil characters are some of the final ones David will face before Matt Smith replaces him."

Here is the first picture of the K9 model that features in the spin-off series currently being filmed in Australia.
The photo - taken on set - gives fans a glimpse of what they can expect to see when the show, called simply K9, airs on Network Ten.
The teaser image comes in advance of a full press photo release, which is due to take place towards the end of March.
Although a precise transmission date has yet to be confirmed, it is believed the 26-part series will be broadcast later this year.

Hannah Murray for 'Doctor Who' companion?

Skins star Hannah Murray has been tipped to become Matt Smith's companion in the fifth series of Doctor Who.
Murray, who played Cassie in the first two series of the Channel 4 teen drama, is supposedly in secret talks with producers about the role, News Of The World reports.
A BBC insider said: "Hannah did some challenging stuff in Skins and they see her as an up-and-comer."
Other stars reportedly being considered for the role include Georgia Moffett, Lily Allen and Kelly Brook.
Russell T. Davies has confirmed that he does not want to "ruin anyone's chances" of being cast as the fifth series companion by using them in this year's specials.

Doctor Who - More Specials Casting News
A neighbourly Aussie and a model join the Time Lord for the Doctor Who specials. We also find out what planet the finale is set on.
Two more names have been added to the cast of the upcoming Doctor Who specials; model Gemma Chan and former Neighbours actor Peter O'Brien.
Chan was spotted filming on the streets of Newport last week with Lindsay Duncan and David Tennant. According to a casting website, castingcallpro.com, the model will play a character called Mia Bennett in the Christmas special.
According to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, O'Brien has confirmed that he will be filming Doctor Who at the end of this month. The former Casualty actor added that he will be playing a villain in the episode, part of David Tennant's final story, and it will be set on Mars. The Australian has previously worked with outgoing Who showrunner Russell T Davies on Queer As Folk.
So far the BBC has not confirmed the broadcast dates for any of the specials though it is believed that the first, Planet of the Dead, will air at Easter whilst the second will be shown on Christmas day. The very last episode will be screened in 2010, possibly New Year's Day.

Who will be Doctor Who's new sidekick?
It's been two months since Matt Smith was unveiled as the 11th Doctor, so the casting of his new companion must surely be imminent. Here are the contenders
Emma Rigby
A wild outside punt, but my personal favourite. Rigby plays Hannah in the rebooted Hollyoaks and is one of the best things about it. Her brutal performance in the anorexia storyline broke ground and won awards. Since then, Hannah's matured into a plucky, kooky and confident character, all fine qualities for Tardis travelling. She also looks suitably younger than Matt Smith. Rigby's imminent exit from Hollyoaks will dovetail perfectly with the start of filming for series five. And wouldn't it just annoy all the people who complained that Smith's casting was the "Hollyoaks-ing of Who" in the first place?
Michelle Ryan
For a long time, the obvious choice. Both accomplished actor and BBC household name, she also has sci-fi chops, having starred in the doomed remake of Bionic Woman in the US and Merlin in the UK. She has also worked previously with incoming writer Steven Moffatt – she was impressive in his Jekyll. She would be the perfect companion. So it's rather a shame that she's probably out of the running thanks to having already been cast as posh companion Lady Christina de Souza in upcoming special Planet of the Dead.
Lily Allen
A precocious pop celebutante reinventing herself as a time-travelling girl-next-door in the nation's favourite series? That'll never work! Still, the Sun's random casting generator provided a few seconds of amusement when it claimed that chiefs were "desperate to sign her". If Lily had any notable acting experience to speak of, and if her pop career wasn't flourishing, then this might have been something to think about. But, no. Ridiculous, obviously.
Carey Mulligan
If fans really had any power then this would have been decided months ago. Ever since her one-off appearance as Sally Sparrow in Moffatt's incredible season-three story Blink, fans have been calling for her to return when Moff takes the helm. Sally was the kind of arty and sarky girl that he excels at writing. But the fact that her story was finished, plus Mulligan's own growing reputation, make this another unlikely one.
Zoe Tapper
Don't be surprised to find Tapper – who looks like the kind of porcelain doll who could kick your teeth out – at the top of the most-wanted lists. She was sublime as Dr Anya in the remake of Survivors (a show whose cast overlapped with Who all over the place). Plus she's no stranger to Saturday night telefantasy – her turn as Mina Harker was just about the only thing worth watching in the likely-to-be-axed Demons.
Katee Sackhoff
The BBC cast an American Captain Jack in an attempt to make the show more exportable, but it only half worked, since his spin-off show Torchwood is a bigger deal in the US than Who. An American actor as the main companion would be the next logical step, and sci-fi's favourite daughter right now is Sackhoff, the conflicted kick-ass heroine Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica. Of course, Sackhoff's going to be doing plenty of auditions at the moment.
Freema Agyeman
Agyeman has already as good as admitted that she's probably coming back to ease the transition between the two Doctors. It's unlikely that Martha Jones would step back aboard the Tardis full-time, but she's the only one of Ten's companions who feasibly could maintain a presence in the Whoniverse. This would be Russell T Davies's third attempt to do the character of Martha justice, having wasted her with the unrequited love story in series three and sent her off on solo night missions for most of series four.

More set pics and Dean Gaffney also joins the cast

The set pics above show the Doctor traveling with three companions, hmmmm, who is the man we can see leaving the tardis also? Might it be ex~Eastenders cast member Dean Gaffney? Looks to be true he has been twittering away about his who experience and he said: "Sorry about the lack of tweets been filming for the new Dr Who."
The second pic shows the familar face of ood sigma popping up and apparently giving the Doctor a fright, whats that about? It is rumored he will show up at the end of the second special and will lead over to the third unfilmed as of yet.

New Doctor Who one-shot comic coming this month
IDW will release a special one-shot Doctor Who comic, "The Whispering Gallery," by artist Ben Templesmith and writers Leah Moore & John Reppion.
In "The Whispering Gallery," the TARDIS lands in a mazelike gallery filled with thousands of talking pictures, and the Doctor and Martha discover they've come across a planet where showing emotion has been outlawed. The inhabitants have good reason for their suppression, but it wouldn't be like the Doctor to leave them in fear of truly living.
Married writing team Leah Moore and John Reppion have been fans of Doctor Who and pitched IDW Publishing on their story idea for the classic British sci-fi hero after Leah had a dream about a two-page spread one night.
Moore and Reppion became involved in the project after being approached by artist Templesmith (30 Days of Night), an admirer of their work.
Doctor Who: The Whispering Gallery hits stands on Feb. 25.

David Tennant the's best Doctor Who for me, says John Barrowman
JOHN BARROWMAN feels like he's cheated on David Tennant after meeting the new Doctor Who, Matt Smith.
Glaswegian-born John, 41, who plays Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, has become friends with fellow Scot David, who is quitting as the 10th Doctor at the end of the year.
But John, who is gay, hadn't met Matt until five minutes before our interview, and was clearly a bit giddy at the chance encounter.
He laughed: "I feel like I've had an affair against David because I've met the new guy. I liked him but, David, my heart is always with you."

Noel Clarke has confirmed that he will not be appearing in any future episodes of Doctor Who.
The Adulthood director made the comment after he praised the choice of new Doctor Matt Smith.
Clarke told thelondonpaper: "He's great - young and dynamic.

Torchwood: Children of Earth Official Trailer
Torchwood: Children of Earth - In one epic story told over five nights the new series, to be broadcast on BBC One (UK) and BBC AMERICA (U.S.) later this year, promises to be Torchwood's greatest adrenalin-fueled, high octane adventure yet.
K9 RETURNS TO THE SJA IN 2009
"We've already got 10 scripts at first draft stage, and I can now announce that K9 is going to make a return to Sarah Jane's attic! He's been locked away in that safe, saving the world from a Black Hole, for far too long now. And he's so loved, especially by children, that we wanted him back. Many thanks to his co-creator, Bob Baker, and the estate of the late Dave Martin, for allowing this to happen."
+
She continues, "K9 won't be in every single episode - right now, we estimate he'll appear in approximately six of the 12 episodes. And I can promise that the fun is only just beginning - just wait 'til he gets to meet Mr. Smith properly!"+
The production team are supposedly awaiting to hear from Nicholas Courtney with the intention of his Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart character returning. Also slated for guest spots, but still unconfirmed, are Yasmin Paige, Joseph Millson and Juliet Cowan - aka the Jackson family, in a storyline that wraps up their current character arcs, possibly at the wedding of Chrissie Jackson to current bit on the side Ivan...

(That news comes direct from a trusted source, and not DWM)+
Doctor Who Magazine issue 405 also reveals news on the Gareth Roberts/Russell T Davies scribed Doctor Who easter special, "Planet of the Dead" which guest stars Michelle Ryan (of The Bionic Woman, Jekyll and Merlin fame) and comedian Lee Evans. The episode marks the first time that Doctor Who will have been filmed in High-Definition.

There's also a neat article on why the general public never seem to remember the many invasion attempts made by alien menaces over the years (including a look back at many classic era Sarah Jane stories, featuring Zygons, Dinosaurs and Loch Ness Monsters!).+
Part time producer Susie Liggat also talks exclusively to Dan Berry about her Doctor Who experiences - but us Smithies will also remember her involvement with the "Invasion of the Bane" pilot episode that helped to launch the SJA back in 2007. Sadly Liggat doesn't discuss the SJA in her interview, which also covers Russell T Davies' 2005 Casanova remount.

And finally, Dave Owen reviews the entire second series in a page, calling the Brigadier's return a triumph, and the arrival of the Chandra family as something that needs "a bit of work" in order to perfect the formula.

Martha, Mickey returning?
Lots of buzz over the last week about a possible return (again) for Dr. Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman, in one of this year's upcoming specials. You can find the rumors here, here, here and here. Now, take that with the appropriately-sized grain of salt - I think there were a lot of rumors floating around in the last few months on purpose to keep fans from being completely unsurprised by the announcement of the 11th Doctor.
Torchwood trailer to air this week
UK and US fans of Torchwood can look forward to a sneak preview of the brand new series of the award-winning drama later this week. From 9pm on Thursday 5 February a 60-second trailer of Torchwood: Children Of Earth will be shown on the Torchwood website, bbc.co.uk/torchwood.
The trailer will be simultaneously broadcast at New York ComicCon 2009 - where series star Eve Myles and director Euros Lyn will be taking part in a panel session. The series has proved a big hit with audiences in the US where it is BBC America’s highest-rated series.
The upcoming third series sees a major change of format, telling just one story over five consecutive nights on BBC One.

New baddies set for Doctor Who
Doctor Who is set to face a new monster. The Time Lord will come face-to-face with a half-man half-fly creature called the Tritovore, according to the Daily Mirror.
It seems the baddie will appear in the Easter special episode, which will also see new sidekick Lady Christina de Souza - played by Michelle Ryan - make her debut.
A set source told the newspaper: "Scriptwriters are confident they'll make a huge impact.
"Everyone remembers the Daleks and the Cybermen, but not a lot else if they're honest.
"The Tritovore will change that. They are disgusting and will last long in the memory."
The source added that show boss Russell T Davies wanted David Tennant to have a memorable final episode.
"Russell is telling everyone to expect some real surprises. He wants him to go out with a bang," the source said.

Who rewrite after damage to bus
Doctor Who writers were forced to change the script for the show's Easter special after a double-decker bus was damaged ahead of filming in Dubai.
Planet of the Dead's plot sends David Tennant's Doctor and guest star Michelle Ryan on a dangerous bus trip.
One bus is being used for filming scenes in Cardiff, but the top deck of the second vehicle was damaged as it arrived in Dubai.
A spokeswoman said that shooting was "continuing as normal".
'Huge impact'
Parts of the script by executive producer Russell T Davies and co-writer Gareth Roberts had to be changed as a result of the damage.
Planet of the Dead is the first of four Doctor Who specials, which will bring to an end David Tennant's spell as the Time Lord.
Ex-EastEnder and Bionic Woman Ryan plays Lady Christina de Souza, a woman with a mysterious past who Davies says will have a "huge impact" on the Doctor.
Comedian Lee Evans is also on board for the episode but further details of the plot are being kept secret.

The Sun is running a retread rumor, wish it was true
FORMER Doctor Who Paul McGann is making a surprise comeback to the Tardis next year.
The star of cult movie Withnail And I played the eighth Doc in a one-off TV film collaboration between the BBC and Fox in 1996.
But a follow-up series was never made and when the sci-fi show eventually returned to the Beeb in 2005, it starred Christopher Eccleston, 44, as the new Time Lord.
But Paul, 48, reprised his role in several audio adventures — some broadcast on radio — and has remained a firm favourite with fans.
He is expected to begin filming in October or November for one of four feature-length specials to be shown instead of a series in 2009.
Flashback scenes will see him battered from the Time War and shorn of the long hair he had in the film.
An insider said: “Fans loved Paul’s Doctor and feel he was never given the proper chance to shine. Reference is often made to the Time War which wiped out the Time Lords and this will give them a taste of that.”
Current Doc David Tennant will also appear.

Michelle Ryan might be Doctor Who's next companion
I wasn't a big fan of NBC's Bionic Woman remake. The best thing about it – besides Katee Sackhoff's guest turn – was star Michelle Ryan. The English actress not only looked the part, but her performance sometimes managed to make the show feel richer and more complex than it actually was. So I was happy to hear that she might play the new Doctor's companion on Doctor Who."Michelle's been in secret talks with BBC bosses," a source told the UK's Sunday Mirror. "They are likely to announce her as Doctor Who's new assistant very soon. She is perfect for the role. She is good looking and the right age to star alongside Matt (Smith). Everyone agrees they look great together and reckon fans will think they're the perfect team, too."I'm sure Ryan will get the part. She auditioned for the assistant role after Billie Piper left in 2005. She lost out to Freema Agyeman, but her profile has only gone up since then. I'm excited about the possible Ryan/Matt Smith combo. I might be in the minority here, but I hope Doctor Who will look and feel very different once Smith takes over the role. I'll really miss David Tennant and everything and everyone about the current incarnation of Doctor Who, but I think it's time to regenerate. What do you think about the possibility of Ryan time traveling with the new Doctor? Are you still holding out hope for Lily Allen?
Freema Agyeman praises Matt Smith
Freema Agyeman has spoken of her delight at Matt Smith being chosen as the new Doctor Who. Skip related content
The 29-year-old actress, who starred as Martha Jones in the long-running series, said she was delighted Matt will replace David Tennant as the Doctor.
She said: "I think Matt looks absolutely fantastic, he really does. He seems to have all the right things that are needed. He has the gravitas and the weight to represent someone who is 900 plus years old but also he's got those quirks about him that would lend itself to the flight of fancy that the Doctor has. And he just looks fantastic, the hair everything! I'm really excited!"
Freema, who is now starring in Law and Order UK, also said she "thanked my lucky stars" for her part in Doctor Who.
She said: "I had an absolutely amazing time on the show. I truly, truly enjoyed myself.
"It's so nice to get a long-running job in this career but if you can get up in the morning and look forward to getting to work it's an absolute bonus and I completely had that throughout all of my time there."

Piper: 'Matt Smith will be great Doctor'
Billie Piper has revealed that she approves of new Doctor Who star Matt Smith.
The actress, who played the Doctor's assistant on the cult show, admitted that she is a "big fan" of the actor and that she is confident he was right for the part.
"I love him," she said. "He's a stirring actor, and he has the right energy,...That's what the Doctor is about, essentially - having that energy that you just can't understand."
Referring to concerns that 26-year-old Smith is too young to play the character, she said: "The fans get so concerned about these things, and they should just relax. It's going to be fine. They're in good hands."
However, when asked about rumours that the Time Lord could eventually be played by a female, she said: "I don't think the Doctor should be a woman...It's like going, 'Let's make James Bond a woman'. It's a man's role."
Smith, who was announced as David Tennant's replacement earlier this year, is scheduled to make his debut as the Doctor in 2010.

Tennant stuns kids at Davison's party
David Tennant's appearance at the birthday party of Peter Davison's young son stunned the children in attendance - apart from Davison's own.
Former Doctor Who actor Davison, currently starring in ITV1 drama Unforgiven, told Digital Spy: "My son Louis had a birthday party and Georgia [Moffett, Davison's daughter] was coming to his party and she turned up with David Tennant, and every other child in the garden was [shocked] - but my children were like 'I've met him before'."
Davison, who shared the Tardis alongside Tennant in the Children In Need special 'Time Crash', explained the reaction: "Well, they don't know any other world in which their dad is not in Doctor Who, so they're not as impressed as their friends are. We had David Tennant around... and they were almost unimpressed with him, I have to say!

Susan Foreman is Returning...to Big Finish that is
Forty-five years after she left Doctor Who, Carole Ann Ford is returning to the role of the Susan Foreman in An Earthly Child. This special hour-long audio play from Big Finish Productions finds the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) visiting the planet Earth in the 22nd Century to check the progress of the grand-daughter he left behind. Things have moved on since he was last there: Susan has become a key player in rebuilding the remnants of a world decimated by a Dalek invasion, and she has a son from her marriage to David. And Alex Campbell, the Doctor's great-grandson, is played by Jake McGann the son of Paul...From its inception right through to the recording day, this production felt very special indeed, says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. Marc Platt has written an emotionally-charged and dramatic script, which delivers everything fans could wish to see in such a momentous reunion between the Doctor and Susan. And Paul McGann was just thrilled to be working on this episode he absolutely embraced the exploration of Doctor Who's own mythology, and Jake was just perfect in the role of Alex. It was also lovely to work with Carole again the scenes between the Doctor and Susan will, I have no doubt, bring a tear or two to the eyes of listeners. The cast also includes Leslie Ash (Men Behaving Badly) as Marion Fleming and Ian Hallard as Duncan. An Earthly Child will be given away free in December 2009 to the subscribers of Big Finish's monthly Doctor Who range.

Former 'Who' companion wants to return
Frazer Hines is keen to reprise his role as companion Jamie McCrimmon in the modern incarnation of Doctor Who.
The actor, who played the kilt-wearing Scotsman alongside Patrick Troughton between 1966 and 1969, told Doctor Who Magazine: "I just hope I get a call from the new Doctor Who producers, inviting me back. If Sarah Jane can do it, why can't Jamie?"
Hines, who last returned as Jamie in the 1985 story 'The Two Doctors', added: "They've got a young male Doctor now, and a young female assistant, so they need somebody like me for the grannies and the housewives!"

Doctor Who: The TV Movie Out Takes
I really like the green screen scene where Paul is hugging the lil boy, awwwwwww. 8 really got the shaft....
Allen favourite for 'Who' assistant

Lily Allen has emerged as the favourite to take on the role of The Doctor's assistant, reports The Telegraph.
The show's bosses are reportedly eager to hire a showbusiness name to act alongside Matt Smith, the relatively unknown actor recently revealed as the eleventh Doctor.
"Having got the casting of The Doctor out of the way, the companion role is where we will be looking next," said executive producer Piers Wenger.
"Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly.
"We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."
The singer was previously linked to the role in 2007, before it went to comedienne Catherine Tate.
Strictly Come Dancing stars Rachel Stevens and Kelly Brook are also reported to be in consideration for the part.

10 things you didn't know about Matt Smith
Want to know some things about the man who is replacing David Tennant as Doctor Who? You're in the right place...
With Matt Smith now confirmed as the new Doctor Who, what do we know about David Tennant’s replacement? Let’s take a look…
1.
He's the youngest Doctor Who ever, aged just 26. Peter Davison, the previous youngest Doctor, was 29 when he took on the role.
2.
Smith wasn't one of the bookies' considerations for the role. Paterson Joseph and David Morrissey have long been the bookies' favourites. Smith wasn't even in the last list of odds published by William Hill, although he did casually pop up in the BBC website's list of runners and riders...
3.
Smith originally planned to be a professional footballer, before his career was cut short by a back injury. Hence, he went off to study drama instead and embarked on an acting career. He didn't go to drama school, though, instead going to the University of East Anglia to study Drama and Creative Writing.
4.
Smith has a growing theatre pedigree. He has appeared in the West Wnd in Alan Bennett's The History Boys, and also alongside Christian Slater in Swimming With Sharks. His work has previously attracted Olivier award recognition.
5.
He made his television debut in The Ruby In the Smoke back in 2006, based on the Philip Pullman book.
6.
He's appeared three times alongside Billie Piper. Firstly, in the aforementioned The Ruby In The Smoke, then The Shadow In The North. He then also popped up in an episode of Secret Diary Of A Call Girl.
7.
He had a brief film appearance in 2008's In Bruges, and had also appeared in lesser known films Falling and Gotham, IL
8.
Perhaps his highest profile television work to date was in the BBC Two programme Party Animals, where he appeared in the role of a parliamentary researcher. That was back in 2007.
9.
Smith had to go through an audition process to get the role. New BBC Wales Head of Drama Piers Wenger said that he knew they'd got their man when he saw Smith's audition. It all sounds a bit PR-y to us, but that's their line.
10.
Smith won't actually be seen as Doctor Who until 2010. David Tennant will be finishing his specials off first, and then Smith will be in the role from season five in Spring of 2010. He has had no appearance or link with the show before.
And also...
11.
He's the first new Doctor Who to be revealed on an overblown instalment of Doctor Who Confidential. Was it just us that felt they were spinning that out as if they'd been on X-Factor pills?

Search for new Doctor Who's partner begins
The producers of Doctor Who have begun the search for a "high profile" female companion after unveiling little-known actor Matt Smith as the new Time Lord.
Smith, 26, a surprise choice for the 11th Doctor and the youngest actor ever to take the role, is largely unfamiliar to audiences and BBC bosses are keen to pair him with a showbusiness name.
The singer Lily Allen is an early favourite, while sources say Strictly Come Dancing stars Rachel Stevens and Kelly Brook are high on the BBC's wish-list.
Producers are looking for someone who is famous outside the world of acting – replicating the success of former Doctor's assistant Billie Piper, who was better known as a teenage popstar and the wife of DJ Chris Evans when she landed the role but proved a hit with viewers.
Auditions will take place over the coming months and filming begins in the summer. Piers Wenger, executive producer of the BBC One show, said: "Having got the casting of the Doctor out of the way, the companion role is where we will be looking next.
"Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly."
Allen, 23, was linked with the role once before, but it went to comedienne Catherine Tate. She is a favourite with bosses at the BBC, where she has her own chat show, and is keen to try her hand at acting. She would follow in the footsteps of singer Kylie Minogue, who was cast as the companion in the 2007 Christmas special.
Wenger said: "We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."
Brook, 29, has acting experience, including a remake of the Italian Job, but has never had a major television role. Doctor Who sources say her name has come up in discussions several times. She will face competition from Stevens, 30, who is keen to carve out a screen career and recently took acting lessons in Los Angeles. Model Agyness Deyn, 25, is another possible choice.
All are close in age to Smith, who takes over from David Tennant in 2010. Nearly seven million viewers tuned in to BBC One on Saturday to discover the 11th Doctor's identity.
There had been much talk of a black Doctor Who, with actor Paterson Joseph among the favourites. Wenger disclosed: "We saw a dozen or so people, some of them black. There was never any resistance to the idea of a black Doctor and it would have got us all sorts of headlines and brownie points, but we set out to cast the best actor for the role irrespective of ethnicity or age, and that was Matt."

Matt Smith Bio
Matt Smith, 26, grew up with his family including one sister in Northampton. He was head boy at Northampton School For Boys where he excelled at sports, music and drama.
Initially, Matt wanted to be a professional footballer and played for Northampton Town Under-11 & 12s, Nottingham Forest Under 12, 13 & 14s and Leicester City Under 15 & 16s before a back injury forced him out of the game.
Following his injury, and with the encouragement of one of his teachers, Jerry Hardingham, Matt decided to join the National Youth Theatre.
It was during this time that Matt first gained attention at the Royal Court Theatre when he was cast in the play Fresh Kills, directed by Wilson Milam, whilst still at the University Of East Anglia where he was studying Drama and Creative Writing.
Already a stalwart of the National Youth Theatre, his performance at the Court led to a variety of theatrical experiences at the National Theatre: in the award-winning History Boys (directed by Nick Hytner), On The Shore Of The Wide World (directed by Sarah Frankcom) and also in the acclaimed trio of plays Burn / Citizenship / Chatroom (directed by Anna Mackmin).
These roles led to Matt's first outings on the small screen, alongside Billie Piper in Phillip Pullman's period detective stories, The Ruby In The Smoke and The Shadow In The North (both BBC One), where he played Jim, right-hand man to Billie's detective heroine Sally Lockhart.
These pieces were followed by the lead role of Danny in the BBC Two series Party Animals, the brilliantly observed drama set in the world of young politicians.
In a dazzling return to the Royal Court in 2007, Matt played Henry in Polly Stenham's award-winning first play That Face, opposite Lindsay Duncan. His performance gained Matt an Evening Standard Best Newcomer nomination and a year later the play had a second life in the West End at the Duke of York's Theatre.
In between the two runs, Matt played Guy opposite Christian Slater's Buddy in Swimming With Sharks, Mike Leslie's searing West End adaptation of the 1994 Hollywood film.
In this time he also played a lead role in the BAFTA winning BBC One series The Street, opposite Gina McKee and Lorraine Ashbourne.
Matt has recently completed work on Moses Jones for BBC Two, directed by Michael Offer, in which he plays the lead role of Dan Twentyman, alongside Shaun Parkes in the title role.

Matt Smith is the new Doctor??

The next actor to play Doctor Who is Matt Smith, and he will be the youngest person ever to play the Doctor!
Matt is 26 years old, and will become the 11th Doctor when he takes the keys to the Tardis from David Tennant in 2010 after four more special episodes.
Matt will start filming on the fifth series in the summer. Tennant is filming four specials in 2009 as well!
Until now the actor who played the fifth Doctor, Peter Davidson, was the youngest ever to take on the role.
Matt said: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect."
Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales where the show is made, said that as soon as he had seen Smith's audition he "knew he was the one".
"It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him," he said. "You are either the Doctor or you are not."
Matt's first appearance on TV was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart.
He has also acted with Billie in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North.
New Doctor Who boss
Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009. The last of these special episodes is expected to run in early 2010.
The fifth series won't just be the first for Matt - it's also the first without current Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies.
Instead ace writer Steven Moffat will be in charge of the show, and he needed to find a new Doctor before he could finish the scripts.
The BBC today announced that Matt Smith has been cast in the role of the Doctor in the iconic BBC series Doctor Who.
Smith will be the 11th Time Lord and will take over from David Tennant who leaves the show at the end of 2009. He will be seen in the forthcoming fifth series that will be broadcast in 2010.
The fifth series will also have a new lead writer and Executive Producer in the form of the BAFTA award-winning writer Steven Moffat, who is taking over from Russell T Davies.
Moffat will be joined by Piers Wenger, who will be the new Executive Producer for BBC Wales making the show.
Following David Tennant's decision to step down at the end of 2009, the team behind the new series set about casting the new Doctor so that new adventures could be created and scripts written with Matt in mind.
The identity of the new Doctor was revealed on a special edition of Doctor Who Confidential that was broadcast on BBC One today (3 January) at 5.35pm (17.35 GMT).
In it Smith revealed his initial reaction at taking on such a legendary role and his thoughts on what direction the Doctor might now be going with him playing the part.
Matt Smith said of his new role: "I'm just so excited about the journey that is in front of me. It's a wonderful privilege and challenge that I hope I will thrive on.
"I feel proud and honoured to have been given this opportunity to join a team of people that has worked so tirelessly to make the show so thrilling.
"David Tennant has made the role his own, brilliantly, with grace, talent and persistent dedication. I hope to learn from the standards set by him.
"The challenge for me is to do justice to the show's illustrious past, my predecessors, and most importantly, to those who watch it. I really cannot wait."
Lead writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat said: "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe.
"As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man.
"2010 is a long time away but rest assured the 11th Doctor is coming – and the universe has never been so safe."
Piers Wenger, Head Of Drama, BBC Wales, added: "With two hearts, a ferocious mind and over 900 years of experience behind him, it's not every 26 year old actor who can take on a role like the Doctor but within moments of meeting Matt he showed the skill and imagination needed to create a Doctor all of his own.
"It's just the beginning of the journey for Matt but with Steven Moffat's scripts and the expertise of the production team in Cardiff behind him, there is no one more perfect than him to be taking the TARDIS to exciting new futures when the series returns in 2010.
