S04E03: 'Planet Of The Ood' digital spy article
'Planet Of The Ood' certainly packs an emotional punch, so have hankies on standby when you settle down to watch it. Comfortably the best episode of the fourth season, the story contains many Holocaust parallels and boasts a superbly ambiguous performance from Tim McInnerny as the follicularly challenged villain. What else is in store? Here are a few hints, with three added red herrings for you to have oodles of fun working out.

Dervla Kirwan lands role in Doctor Who?
Dervla Kirwan is reportedly set to star in the 2008 Doctor Who Christmas special.
The Ballykissangel actress has been spotted on the set of the smash-hit sci-fi series in Cardiff, where the one-off episode is being filmed, The Sun reports.
And it seems that the Doctor, played by David Tennant, will face some old enemies - the Cybermen are due to return for the feature-length episode, which is believed to have a Victorian theme.
Locals spotted the steel men on location in a graveyard in Newport, Wales, the paper said.
The news has sparked speculation that the 36-year-old Dervla will return as the Doctor's full-time assistant if Catherine Tate vacates the Tardis in this season's finale.
Doctor Who's head writer, Russell T Davies, has confirmed that the franchise will return in 2009 Doctor Who with three specials starring Tennant.
The full-length fifth series will transmit in 2010.

Oooooh dear. The Ood are back, and they're not happy.
Which is odd, because they're famous throughout the galaxy as peaceful, helpful servants who are eager to serve.
But when the Doctor and Donna arrive on the Ood's home planet, they discover a few are fighting back. And spurred on by Donna, The Doctor is determined to find out why the Ood are the way they are.
This episode is both beautiful and horrifying. And in the same way that last year's Gridlock was about faith and believing in something, this story is about choices. And what's right and what's wrong.

Last of the timelords commentary available
The commentary track for The Last of the Time Lords featuring David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, and John Barrowman, is currently available for download from BBC America. The track was available on the Region 2 release of the Series Three DVD set, but was left off of the Region 1 release due to rights issues. There is also a feature on the site that will allow fans to run the commentary in sync to the episode as it airs on April 19th.

On "Fires of Pompeii"
Much much better episode, donna was more tolerable and less bitchy, she is returning{squeeeeeeeee}!!!! ok the medusa cascade is mentioned once again and another planet was "taken" by a force unknown but i think important as this may be or seem to be this season is really based around one thing. Children, well that or family to a lesser degree, but children have figured so noticeably in these first two episodes, adipose and pyroviles trying to reproduce. And jenny is on her way so soon so soon.

Barrowman criticises "grumpy" Eccleston
John Barrowman has claimed that Christopher Eccleston was "grumpy" on the set of Doctor Who.
The actor, who plays Captain Jack Harkness on the BBC One sci-fi hit, admitted that he did not enjoy spending time with Eccleston when they worked together on the programme.
Eccleston took on the role of The Doctor for one series, which aired in 2005. He was replaced by David Tennant, who is currently starring in his third series.
"Chris was always grumpy. You don't always have to be intense. There comes a point when intensity makes you miserable - I think that was the case with Chris," Barrowman told the Daily Record. "I much prefer working with David - he likes to have a bit more fun, he's more charismatic as a person.
"Chris might have been a great Doc but he was darker and had a chip on his shoulder, he was not as much fun on set as David. I will give him the credit that he was the first Doctor to bring back the series and made a damn good job of it.
"But I just wouldn't go to the pub with him. On the other hand, David's been to my house, we went to the Madonna concert with our partners - we socialise together. He's a lot more fun."

Putting on her ood face?
In the preview for "Fires of pompeii" the daughters or sisters of vulcan or whatever they are to be called are doing a ritual of some kind and they paint there faces and skin. In the pic below they show eyes painted on the back of the hands also. It really looks like ood eyes doesnt it? Is this a tie in or lead up to the next episode "Planet of the ood" ?
Atmos spotted early on
In the photo above you can see an "Atmos" sticker on the cab that showed up for the woman Donna was interviewing when she suddenly melted into adipose babies. "Atmos" will figure into the "The Sontaran Strategem" and "The Poison sky" episodes and perhaps the finale itself.
The episode description of TSS reads : Martha Jones summons the Doctor back to modern-day Earth, but an old enemy lies in wait, as Russell T Davies's Bafta Award-winning time-travelling drama continues. Is there even supposed to be another special? I have gotten confused over the whole mini series, specials, one offs or wtf ever Rusty has planned for the next year or so. A sweet new preview for the second episode of the 4th season is on line now. Below are stills showing the rock monsters the Doctor will be facing. Looks pretty damn sweet too! Some dialogue has surfaced where The Doctor explains to donna exactly why he cannot just save everyone in Pompeii from the volano, it goes like this:

The best bit of Partners in crime was...
Watching the first eppy almost reminded me of the first Sarah Jane adventures. Both had this evil woman that plots an invasion of sorts. I really dislike the new theme alot. The forced comedy of th doctor popping up in a cubicle and donna popping down and vise versa was just ewwww. Would've been a fine episode if donna hadn't shown up in it. Anyway the best bit was at the end in the video below. It was worth the whole wait just to see Rose again, even if it was only for a few seconds.....she looks pissed tho doesn't she?

The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine confirms several details regarding the second series of "The Sarah Jane Adventures". There's a new producer joining the show; Nikki Smith takes over Matthew Bouch's job, as Bouch moves up to occupy the "Series Producer" role.According to Russell T Davies, "The first block consists of four episodes, to be directed by Michael Kerrigan. Michael's an old Doctor Who hand, having directed 1989's Battlefield, and was a brilliant choice to launch Series Two, so it's great to welcome him to Upper Boat."Writers for the 12 part series include Phil Ford, Gareth Roberts and Joseph Lidster.The magazine also has a look behind the scenes of 1975's "The Sontaran Experiment", in the lastest 'Fact of Fiction' feature - to tie in with the return of the Sontarans to the new series, opposite David Tennant's Doctor, in a two part adventure, "The Sontaran Stratagem" / "The Poison Sky" which airs on BBC One later this month.Also included (for anybody interested!) is a terrific Steven Moffat interview, a brand new comic strip, and a querstion & answer session with Who's current overlords Russell T Davies, Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson - which is worth a read in itself because one of my questions got published, and answered by the trio. Episode Nine Title Changed
The title of episode nine of the new series has been changed to Forest of the Dead.
Earlier this week, all Series Four episode names bar the penultimate one were announced in a Radio Times feature. In it, the ninth episode - the concluding instalment of this series' second two-parter - was named as River's Run, but CBBC Newsround now says it has exclusively been told of the title alteration.
The story has been written by Steven Moffat and has Alex Kingston and Colin Salmon as the guest stars.

Have your tears stopped yet? In a shock turn of events, Torchwood has been forced to wave a sad goodbye to its most faithful servant. Toshiko Sato - diligent worker, loyal friend, all-round technical whizz - was killed by Jack's wayward brother Gray in a devastating climax to the season finale. But is it really the end for Tosh? We gave Naoko Mori a call to find out how she's coping with life-after-Tosh.
So, how does it feel to be dead?
"You know what? It hasn't really sunk in yet, I guess. It feels very strange because [the show] has still been on air. I haven't seen the final cut yet but I think it's going to be quite emotional when I do see it. It certainly was really emotional on set, filming it, and saying goodbye to the hub and everyone."
When did you find out that Tosh was going to be killed off?
"I found out probably a good two months' before, in September of last year. When I was told, I was obviously shocked and sad, but to be honest, it made sense to me. The show needed a big season finale. It also made sense because Tosh has been through so much. She's come a full circle and had her journey."
Did you have any say over how she was killed?
"I remember when there was talk of Tosh and Owen exiting, and the first thing I asked was 'how is it going to be done?' The great thing about Russell [T Davies] and Chris [Chibnall, writer] is that they keep you informed and have a real two-way conversation. One of the things that I wanted to ensure was that it made sense, and that the connection between Owen and Tosh had the right balance. All through the series I didn't want it to come across as her being this stalker girl with a crush on Owen. I wanted it to be deeper than that, because as a colleague and as a human being she cared for him. I wanted their last conversation to be delicately and well put."
Were you happy with how it turned out?
"I think it was good. I hope we got the balance right. Sometimes when these deaths occur, one of the dangers is that it's just done for shock value. I wanted it to be shocking, but not just for the sake of that. Hopefully it comes across that way. It wasn't in vain and there was a purpose."
Tosh's final goodbye message was very emotional too, wasn't it?
"I think when I read that I was bawling my eyes out. To me, that was the icing on the cake. It was just so Tosh, in a nutshell. Having talked to Russell and Chris about it before, that just nailed it for me. In retrospect, I couldn't have asked for more. It was a really lovely moment."
What do you think was going through Tosh's head as she knew she was dying?
"Hmm. I'm trying to remember how I felt as Tosh. I remember feeling fairly sort of peaceful about it. She'd come to terms with a lot of things. Of course she didn't want to die, but it was almost as if she'd come full circle and reached a point where she'd been through everything she could. It broke her heart not to be able to rescue Owen but at the end of it she felt at peace. Like she said in her video, 'thankyou'. Without Torchwood, she would have just stayed at the Ministry of Defence, plodding away in her glasses and big jumper."
All this said, do you think the team will be using the glove on Tosh next series?
"Hahaha! I hope so. Never say never. There has been talk and we've kind of left that open and in the air. It would be nice, wouldn't it?"
Would you want to go back? It's kind of been wrapped up as it is.
"Torchwood has been the most phenomenal experience for me, as a person and as an actor. It's certainly changed my life! I would never say no to [going back], but as I've always said, I want to make sure it's done for the right reason. It all depends on the story and should not just for the sake of it. If they do then I'm sure it will be, because it's Russell and the great team of writers he has. We'll just have to see, I guess. Would people want to see that happen?"
The many Tosh fans certainly would...
"Yeah, it would be nice. I love Tosh, however imperfect she is, and it's been a joy going through the journey with her. Sometimes I used to get frustrated and want to give her a slap around the face and say 'Just leave it alone!' or 'Don't say that!' Especially all that stuff about Owen. It's like 'Come on, girlfriend. Get over it!' In a way I'm glad that she didn't get together with Owen, because I think it would have been a disaster."
Why do you say that?
"I think it just wouldn't have been right. Obviously they both care for each other, but the work would get in the way, and it would have meant her stretching out to be more open and chilled about things. I think they're better off as friends."
What's next for you now?
"Well, there's a couple of things. There's two projects in the States I'm waiting to hear on and I also have a theatre project in Japan. I'm trying to work out which way to go and sod's law, things clash. So who knows, maybe there'll also be a fleeting visit to Torchwood in the next series?"

The show needed a big season finale. It also made sense because Tosh has been through so much. She's come a full circle and had her journey."
Did you have any say over how she was killed?
"I remember when there was talk of Tosh and Owen exiting, and the first thing I asked was 'how is it going to be done?' The great thing about Russell [T Davies] and Chris [Chibnall, writer] is that they keep you informed and have a real two-way conversation. One of the things that I wanted to ensure was that it made sense, and that the connection between Owen and Tosh had the right balance. All through the series I didn't want it to come across as her being this stalker girl with a crush on Owen. I wanted it to be deeper than that, because as a colleague and as a human being she cared for him. I wanted their last conversation to be delicately and well put."
Were you happy with how it turned out?
"I think it was good. I hope we got the balance right. Sometimes when these deaths occur, one of the dangers is that it's just done for shock value. I wanted it to be shocking, but not just for the sake of that. Hopefully it comes across that way. It wasn't in vain and there was a purpose."
Tosh's final goodbye message was very emotional too, wasn't it?
"I think when I read that I was bawling my eyes out. To me, that was the icing on the cake. It was just so Tosh, in a nutshell. Having talked to Russell and Chris about it before, that just nailed it for me. In retrospect, I couldn't have asked for more. It was a really lovely moment."
What do you think was going through Tosh's head as she knew she was dying?
"Hmm. I'm trying to remember how I felt as Tosh. I remember feeling fairly sort of peaceful about it. She'd come to terms with a lot of things. Of course she didn't want to die, but it was almost as if she'd come full circle and reached a point where she'd been through everything she could. It broke her heart not to be able to rescue Owen but at the end of it she felt at peace. Like she said in her video, 'thankyou'. Without Torchwood, she would have just stayed at the Ministry of Defence, plodding away in her glasses and big jumper."
All this said, do you think the team will be using the glove on Tosh next series?
"Hahaha! I hope so. Never say never. There has been talk and we've kind of left that open and in the air. It would be nice, wouldn't it?"
Would you want to go back? It's kind of been wrapped up as it is.
"Torchwood has been the most phenomenal experience for me, as a person and as an actor. It's certainly changed my life! I would never say no to [going back], but as I've always said, I want to make sure it's done for the right reason. It all depends on the story and should not just for the sake of it. If they do then I'm sure it will be, because it's Russell and the great team of writers he has. We'll just have to see, I guess. Would people want to see that happen?"
The many Tosh fans certainly would...
"Yeah, it would be nice. I love Tosh, however imperfect she is, and it's been a joy going through the journey with her. Sometimes I used to get frustrated and want to give her a slap around the face and say 'Just leave it alone!' or 'Don't say that!' Especially all that stuff about Owen. It's like 'Come on, girlfriend. Get over it!' In a way I'm glad that she didn't get together with Owen, because I think it would have been a disaster."
Why do you say that?
"I think it just wouldn't have been right. Obviously they both care for each other, but the work would get in the way, and it would have meant her stretching out to be more open and chilled about things. I think they're better off as friends."
What's next for you now?
"Well, there's a couple of things. There's two projects in the States I'm waiting to hear on and I also have a theatre project in Japan. I'm trying to work out which way to go and sod's law, things clash. So who knows, maybe there'll also be a fleeting visit to Torchwood in the next series?"

Old friends and old villians returning to Who
The BBC rolled out a brand new trailer to tease the 4th season of Dr Who and it was filled with familar faces and teased a very familar villian. They include Martha, Capt. Jack, Sarah Jane, Mickey, Jackie, Rose, and Harriet Jones.
Who they'll be fighting is still a mystery, but the person who might be the main villain was shown partly hidden in shadow. The villain had the bottom half of a Dalek, while its top half looked like it could be human. This almost comfirms the rumor of Julian Bleach playing the evil dalek creator returning to plague the Doctor and his companions once again. The return of Davros has been teased every year since the return of the series and perhaps this year may be the payoff.
David Tennant, who finished filming the series last week, told CBBC Newsround: "It's been great to have a lot of old friends back. We had a really good time."
The team behind the Doctor Who show will be hoping that the return of popular characters like Rose and Sarah Jane will mean that millions of viewers will keep tuning in.
Tennant added that he thought the storylines in this series would also be an important factor.
"Hopefully the stories are still interesting and exciting and different and unexpected," he said. "I can't wait for people to see it."

No romance for Doctor and Donna thank god!
There will be no romance between the Doctor and new companion Donna Noble in Doctor Who.Speaking at last night's premiere for the fourth series, stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate revealed that their characters agree to remain friends.Tennant said he was happy to do without a romantic connection this time around, telling reporters: "It's sort of the next thing to do. Sarah Lancashire has revealed that she plays a "warped Mary Poppins" in Doctor Who.The actress stars as Miss Foster in the first episode of the new series, alongside David Tennant and new companion Catherine Tate.Her character, described as an "enigmatic and powerful businesswoman", leads an invasion of Earth by a secret army of aliens called the Adipose.She told the Daily Star: "Miss Foster is, essentially, a nanny, a guardian to some rather unusual children. Some new bits of info have leaked out about Doctor Who season four. The Agatha Christie episode attempts to explore the real-life mystery of Christie's two-week disappearance.
Meanwhile, Steven Moffat's two-parter set in the giant deserted library features "data ghosts," plus a menacing entity called the Suit Creature, which may be sort of like Moffat's "Empty Child" from back in season one. Also, the library's air swarms with flesh-melting piranha called the Vashta Nerada, and the library is full of dead bodies. ER's Alex Kingston plays an Indiana Jones-esque archeologist.
And there are more rumors that Dalek creator Davros will be back. Also, completely iffy rumors that the prehistoric Sea Devils, the Axons and jolly rogue Sabalom Glitz will put in appearances. [TeleWatcher]
Meanwhile, in "Planet of the Ood," we learn what drove the Ood to become a servant race. And in "The Sontaran Strategem," the cloned warrior Sontarans show up on Earth looking for their longtime enemies the Rutans. Radio 4 to air one-off 'Torchwood'
A one-off special of Torchwood is being made to air on BBC Radio 4 in the summer.The 45-minute show is written by Joseph Lidster, who penned a recent television episode and is behind much of the BBC's online Doctor Who content.Stars including John Barrowman will feature and the Torchwood team will produce along with BBC Wales's Kate McAll.Airing as Radio 4's Afternoon Play, it has been planned to coincide with the opening of the world's biggest particle accelerator in Switzerland.Lidster is working the story around a particle accelerator, according to Broadcast.
Spoilers for episode one and two of season 4
Apparently the "silly" Doctor Who season opener is about the Doctor and Donna investigating a shady diet pill company that's really run by an evil alien, Miss Foster. And "it's up to the intrepid Time Lord and his new assistant to stop a million overweight Brits being turned into sickeningly cute alien babies." It's like Russell T. Davies has a groove in his brain, and he can't stop thinking about fat people who turn into babies!
And then the second episode, in Pompeii, is much as you'd heard, with the evil Pyrovillians, "a clan of terrifying fire monsters who live deep inside the volcano." At one point, Donna asks what people in Pompeii do for fun, "hang out at TK Maximus?" (Which may be a reference to the British version of discount clothing chain TJ Maxx.) Hilarity ensues, depending on your hilarity threshold.
And then the second episode, in Pompeii, is much as you'd heard, with the evil Pyrovillians, "a clan of terrifying fire monsters who live deep inside the volcano." At one point, Donna asks what people in Pompeii do for fun, "hang out at TK Maximus?" (Which may be a reference to the British version of discount clothing chain TJ Maxx.) Hilarity ensues, depending on your hilarity threshold.

In a nutshell, Spike sets off bombs at all of Cardiff's nuclear facilities (plural?!), and whisks Captain Jack back in time 2,000 years. It turns out Spike isn't in control of his own actions, but is the puppet of Captain Jack's evil brother Gray, who's gone insane after years of torture at the hands (claws) of hellish creatures. They bury Jack alive, but Spike slips Jack a ring with a homing beacon.
Then Gray zips Spike back to the present. Spike nearly gets killed by Weevils, but Ianto saves him. Owen, meanwhile, is trying to keep all of Cardiff's many nuclear reactors from exploding. Gray shoots Tosh, who lives long enough to help Owen avert nuclear catastrophe. The radiation destroys Owen just as Tosh dies, so they sort of die together. Meanwhile, Jack has been locked in a drawer at Torchwood for 100 years after some Torchwood women dug him up in 1900. (They found the homing device that Spike gave him, but Jack decided to hide in a drawer for 100 years to avoid meeting himself.) Jack puts his brother "on ice" but lets Spike go free.
And then as the team clears out Owen and Tosh's stuff, they find a farewell video that Tosh left behind, addressed to Owen (who'll never see it.) Then we end with Gwen, Ianto and Jack sitting sadly on the docks of scenic Cardiff, land of a thousand nuclear reactors.

Doctor Who RPG for 2008
looks like Cubicle 7 Entertainment will be releasing an officially licenced Doctor Who roleplaying game this year.
With all the new elements added by the new TV series this could prove to be a worthwhile game. Hopefully it will include the 'classic series' as well. Not much has been released yet except that it will be "a brand new game system designed to appeal to both traditional gamers and a whole new generation of players."

Baker: I'd do Dr Who cameo 'if they ask me nicely'
Former Dr Who Tom Baker said he would consider a guest role in the hit show’s remake if “they ask me nicely”.
Baker – who lived near Maidstone when he starred as TV’s favourite Timelord in the 1970s – has retained a high profile on the small screen as the voice of cult comedy Little Britain.
But speaking at the launch of an exhibition at Earls Court, London, dedicated to the new series of the science fiction show with David Tennant in the title role he did not rule out a special appearance in a programme which has become famous for reintroducing past favourites, such as journalist Sarah-Jane Smith, robot dog K9 and the villainous Daleks and Cybermen.
“Perhaps I might make a guest appearance - perhaps,” he said.
“Providing they ask me nicely, of course.”
But Baker admitted he has not been following the new adventures of The Doctor.
“I don’t actually watch [Dr Who],” he said.
“I didn’t even watch it when I was in it - for all sorts of reasons.
“But I do get messages from David Tennant and I have seen him in other things of course.
“He has been a huge success and I am very pleased about that.”
During the 1960s and 70s the show was famous for its unconvincing special effects and cardboard style sets.
But the 21st century remake has seen big budgets, computer generated images for effects and more sophisticated costumes and make up for aliens.
After visiting the show, which runs throughout the summer, Baker said: “Well it’s moved on a lot hasn’t it? We had very small budgets but that has all changed. It’s more like a film now.”
He succeeded Jon Pertwee in the role of Dr Who in 1974 after a former “career” as a monk and work on a building site.
During his seven years at the controls of the time and space travelling Tardis, Baker became probably the most popular of the original actors to play the iconic role - and was best known for offering jelly babies to enemies and for his long scarf.
In 1986, Baker married Sue Jerrard, who had been an assistant editor on Doctor Who. They moved to an old property in Boughton Malherbe near Maidstone, where they kept several cats, before emigrating to France in 2002.
During this time he was a regular in the Red Lion in Lenham village. The couple sold the property to Vic Reeves, with whom Baker had worked on Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), although Reeves has subsequently moved to neary Charing.

“I don’t actually watch [Dr Who],” he said.
“I didn’t even watch it when I was in it - for all sorts of reasons.
“But I do get messages from David Tennant and I have seen him in other things of course.
“He has been a huge success and I am very pleased about that.”
During the 1960s and 70s the show was famous for its unconvincing special effects and cardboard style sets.
But the 21st century remake has seen big budgets, computer generated images for effects and more sophisticated costumes and make up for aliens.
After visiting the show, which runs throughout the summer, Baker said: “Well it’s moved on a lot hasn’t it? We had very small budgets but that has all changed. It’s more like a film now.”
He succeeded Jon Pertwee in the role of Dr Who in 1974 after a former “career” as a monk and work on a building site.
During his seven years at the controls of the time and space travelling Tardis, Baker became probably the most popular of the original actors to play the iconic role - and was best known for offering jelly babies to enemies and for his long scarf.
In 1986, Baker married Sue Jerrard, who had been an assistant editor on Doctor Who. They moved to an old property in Boughton Malherbe near Maidstone, where they kept several cats, before emigrating to France in 2002.
During this time he was a regular in the Red Lion in Lenham village. The couple sold the property to Vic Reeves, with whom Baker had worked on Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), although Reeves has subsequently moved to neary Charing.

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has blasted critics of Catherine Tate's performance as companion Donna Noble in the 2006 Christmas special.He commented to SFX magazine on the negative reactions to Tate's role in 'The Runaway Bride': "It was vitriolic. What are you going to do, cast someone according to what message boards are going to say? I think the great danger is that the writing of a drama becomes a public debate."The doubts about her, as far as I can see, are fundamentally stupid," continued Davies. "They say she's going to shout her way through the whole thing. They say she shouted her way through 'The Runaway Bride'. No, she didn't. Literally, factually, no matter of opinion, no, she did not."However, Davies added that he is unaware as to whether the criticism was noticed by Tate: "I couldn't even tell you if she was aware of it, to be honest... imagine what she has to put up with doing that comedy show and being red-haired as well! Ok here's the Sex in the TARDIS drink with approx measurements:
30 ml vodka
30 ml Kahlua® coffee liqueur
30 ml Bailey's® Irish mint chocolate cream
30 ml Godiva chocolate liqueur
2-3 tablespoons of chocolate syrup
1 banana
3 ice cubes
grated chocolate on top (optional)
Put ingredients in blender. Voila.
For vegans, dairy and lactose intolerant: replace Bailey's with soy milk, additional Godiva chocolate liqueur, and creme de menthe.
I have a sonic screwdriver mixed drink recipe.
1 can of SoBe "essential energy" orange flavor
2 shots of vodka
For the version with either Nine or Ten: add 2 shots of 99 Bananas liqueur.

Meet Noel Clarke
Award-winning actor Noel Clarke has appeared in a variety of films and shows, from Waking the Dead to Casualty, as well as penning the script for Kidulthood (and the upcoming sequel Adulthood) but most science fiction fans will know him best for his recurring role of Mickey Smith, Rose Tyler’s long-suffering boyfriend who eventually graduates to rifle-packing Defender of the Earth in Doctor Who. Fans will have a rare chance to meet Noel in person when he makes an appearance in the Glasgow Forbidden Planet store on Buchanan Street; Noel will be signing and talking to fans from 11am to 1pm on Saturday March 29th so make your way down to the store, conveniently close to both Queen Street station and the Buchanan Street underground.

Putting colour back in the Doctor's cheeks
new video restoration technique could see dozens of classic episodes of series such as Doctor Who and Dad's Army restored to their original colour for the first time in more than 30 years.
Many television programmes made by the BBC and ITV in the late 1960s and early 70s, although some of the first to be made in colour, only exist in black and white today. Among them are 13 episodes of Doctor Who starring Jon Pertwee, another 13 episodes of Steptoe and Son and the whole of Nigel Kneale's seminal 60s drama, The Year of the Sex Olympics.
The original master tapes of many shows were erased during archive purges. However, before wiping, many were copied on to black and white 16mm film for broadcast in countries where colour television was not yet available. Today, it is these black and white films that survive as the only visual records of some of these programmes.
Recolouring the world
The technique of colour recovery is set to extract the original colour from these films and reapply it, to once again generate a colour master tape for the show.
The technology is the brainchild of James Insell, who first realised the technique's potential while with BBC Research at Kingswood Warren in Surrey. Insell's colour recovery process essentially relies upon a mistake made by the technicians making the original 16mm film recordings back in the 1970s.
Telerecordings (as they are known) were created by shooting, on 16mm film, a required programme that was showing on a high clarity television monitor. However, there were several problems with the process. Principal among these was the change of the frame rate - from the 50 frames per second of video to the 25 frames per second of film. This can now be corrected by a technique called VIDFire.
However, there is a more relevant problem. Any black and white telerecording of a colour programme is prone to pick up interference from the colour encoded video signal. This manifests itself as a pattern of small grey dots, called chroma-dots, across the picture. There was a way to stop this from happening, by using a special filter to cut out the electronic artefacts. However, the interference was often deemed so minor that the technicians doing the transfers used no filter and so the resultant film prints often contain a burnt in pattern of these chromadots.
Insell suggested that it might be possible to decode the original colour signal of the show from these chromadots, since they contain an electronic remnant of the original video signal. Since then, Insell has set up an independent group - outside the BBC - to put together a technology to extract this coded pattern within the black and white film and decode it.
"There are various provisos," Insell says. "The quality of the film has got to be good enough to have captured this pattern. We're really talking about working from the original negatives and having an HD scan made to get as much information as possible from the film." Insell also stresses that the process would only work on programmes that were originally recorded in colour.
The technique is not a colourisation process and does not apply new colour to old programmes, but instead unpicks the original colour from the film. This separates the process from computer colourisation, a technique that has been used in America to add colour to feature films such as King Kong.
Insell says: "As far as computer colourisation's concerned it's very time-consuming and very expensive, and you need to either invent colour from scratch or use colour reference material to figure out what colours things were. In the colour recovery process, what you get out are the original colours."
As good as new
Struggling against the loss of the programmes' original line structure (a television picture would be composed of 625 lines of image, lost when transferred to film), significant advances have been made in recovery technology. This has been principally through a working group set up by Insell and the process has now been successfully tested on parts of an episode of Top of the Pops, with the results deemed to be generally good.
Andrew Browne has been one of the computer programmers behind some of the project's more recent moves forward. "The idea that I had was based on an idea that James had, which was to have what he called a localised decoder," he says. "Basically, if you take successive frames from the film, the pattern [of chroma-dots] in the frames varies in a predictable way across the frame. I worked out a way to use the relationships between the patterns in successive frames to infer what the original colours were."
"The recovered colours leave a little bit to the imagination, but you can see that they're pretty much there," Insell says.
With the software to use colour recovery on a larger scale currently in development, both Insell and Browne are hopeful of a wider future for the technology.
"BBC Worldwide is obviously quite interested in releasing archive content, notably with Doctor Who and various programmes like that," Insell says.

Robert Carlyle denies 'Doctor Who' rumours
Robert Carlyle has denied tabloid claims that he is lined up to replace David Tennant as the star of Doctor Who."Nobody has been in touch with me about Doctor Who, so I really don't know where that came from," the Full Monty star told the Radio Times. However, Carlyle did admit that he could be lured into the Tardis in the future: "It's David's [Tennant] part and nothing to do with me, so I can't really think about it at the moment. But... would I do it? Possibly."Tennant is widely expected to leave the acclaimed family show before the fifth season, due to be screened in 2010.

'Doctor Who' scripts leak to tabloid
Spoilers for two new episodes of BBC show Doctor Who have been leaked to The Sun.
The paper claims to have received scripts for episodes nine and ten of the new series, with BBC chiefs "fuming" over the leak.
An insider revealed that producers had been desperate to keep the show's secrets under wraps, saying: "Bosses are fuming - this is the last thing they would want to happen."
The episodes comprise a double bill due to air on BBC One in early summer and sees the Doctor and sidekick Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) travel to the 51st Century.
Ironically the library contains many books that give away SPOILERS about people’s life stories.
ER star Alex Kingston also stars as an astronaut-cum-archaeologist called Professor River Song. The library is full of sinister things such as dead bodies, “data ghosts”, the Suit Creature and the dreaded Vashta Nerada “piranhas of the air – shadows that melt the flesh”.
In later scenes, the Doc and Donna get separated and she ends up in a mysterious hospital where she meets another Doctor – Doctor Moon.
All the while she is trying to work out what is going on and what has happened to her Doctor.
Former ER actress Alex Kingston also appears in the special as an astronaut-archaeologist called Professor River Song.
