The Gunfighters

Review: Is it a shot in the arm, or like pulling teeth?
BBC Audio continue their releases of Classic Doctor Who with this oddity from the end of William Hartnell's run as the Doctor.
It's 1881 and the First Doctor visits Tombstone with toothache, only to find himself caught up in the most famous shootout in history.
As the story has already been released on video, these CDs are primarily aimed at the Who fan on the move, with Peter Purves once again providing narration to explain the less obvious aspects of the onscreen action.
Although it certainly has its bleaker moments, The Gunfighters is mostly a farce. Whether it's the case of mistaken identity between the Doctor and Doc Holiday, or Steven and Dodo's performance at the piano, there are plenty of laughs to be had.
Although the story gains something by leaving the recreation of Tombstone to your imagination, it does highlight some decidely dodgy American accents from the guest cast. Maybe that just adds to the comedy, though? We guaranteeyou won't be able to stop humming musical treat The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon for weeks though.
As a bonus, the release includes an interview with Purves, in which he reveals that although he loathed the story at the time, he's much fonder of it now. Just don't ask him to sing that tune!
If you want to sing along, however, all the music has been coralled together at the end of CD2. Be warned though, in one sitting it feels longer than Bohemian Rhapsody!
Listen to an interview extract.
Listen to that tune.
