DOCTOR Who star David Tennant insists he’s not about to hang up his sonic screwdriver.
Millions of viewers saw BBC Wales’ third series reach a thrilling climax last night as the Timelord took on The Master, played by John Simm.
Amid speculation the Doc’s assistant Martha Jones, played by Freema Agyeman, will not return next year, Tennant has pledged his future to the Tardis.
“From the moment I took the job there has been speculation I was leaving. I’m having the time of my life and I wouldn’t want it any other way at the moment,” the Scot said.
His biggest wobble, he says, was just before his debut episode, The Christmas Invasion, screened in 2005.
He says: “The show had been such a huge hit. It was such a big deal. So much had been written and speculated on and I guess it was the thought of people saying, ‘Oh, he wasn’t as good as the last chap’.”
His fears of failing to match Christopher Eccleston were misplaced. In fact, Tennant was recently voted the best Timelord by readers of Doctor Who magazine.
“I’m not pretending this proves I’m the best. I wouldn’t be so arrogant as to suggest that,” he said. “I’m just delighted the fans aren’t burning effigies of me in the street. To take on the role of Doctor Who and escape with my credibility was all I wanted to do.”
But he reveals the show can be tiring thanks to its “relentless” schedule.
Tennant says: “As long as you keep a little ahead of the schedule, it’s an easy rhythm to be in. If you let it creep up on you, then suddenly you’re having to memorise a lot of scientific bafflegab five seconds before you go on set.”
